We sat in the office a week later, getting the final briefing on what was going to happen. I'd been here twice in that time, and Dr. Raymond was sure that it was the peak time to fertilize. I hadn't expected to be this nervous, but it wasn’t enough to call a halt.

“You can still back out,” Lyle said to me when Dr. Raymond left us alone for a moment.

“Do you want to back out?” I asked.

“No, but this is a bigger deal to you. I only have to do something that I’ve known how to do since I was fourteen.”

A small smile appeared on his face, and I knew he was trying to relax me. "Fourteen?"

“I was a late bloomer.”

“This time, it’s not into a sock.”

A laugh burst out of him. He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye. “We could ditch this place and do this the old-fashioned way.”

I eyed him, and for a moment, it was tempting. He was a hot guy. No doubt about it. I figured he might know his way around a woman's body. Then I shook my head. "Your point of this clinical setting is to avoid entanglements. Sex is the ultimate entanglement."

He waggled his eyebrows. “The most fun one.”

I laughed. I had no sense that Lyle was pressuring me into anything, so the whole situation was just funny. Lyle could date models and actresses. He was that level of hot and that level of income. Even though he wasn't genuinely flirting with me, it still felt good. Because it wasn't real, I felt safe with him.

I lightly punched his shoulder. "Stop."

He shrugged. “Just a thought.”

The doctor came back in, and we were sent to our respective rooms. The room I had my part of this in couldn't have been less romantic. It was only slightly warmer than a hospital room in terms of its décor. Talk about lying back and thinking of England while it was going on. I’d never done that during sex, but I did it now.

We met back in the waiting room when we were done. Lyle was there, barely sitting still. He jumped out of his seat when I appeared in the doorway. "I took care of the bill. Let's go."

Like a bat out of hell, we were on the sidewalk in minutes. “You okay?”

“Yeah. It was just weird.”

“Tell me about it.”

He stopped dragging me and looked down at me. “I’m sorry. That had to be far worse for you. At least I had a porn magazine to look at.”

He was harried and unsettled, and in the short time I'd known him, I didn’t think I'd seen him that way ever. He was usually arrogant and brash, and this was a new side of Lyle. He seemed more human and less titan of industry right now. "It was fine. I survived, and hopefully, I'll be pregnant."

He looked me over. "Yeah. Hopefully, it took, and then we don't have to do this in a lab again."

He strode to where he'd parked his truck.
